“Bridging Beyond Technique: Exploring the Essence of Modern Martial Arts,” and “Unlocking Potential: The Evolution of Haedong Kumdo in the USA.”

Many Korean Taekwondo and Hapkido martial arts masters immigrated to the United States three to four decades ago, imparting numerous techniques that surpassed physical limitations.

While others focused on transmitting skills, I chose to publish two English-language textbooks: “Think out of the box through Haedong Kumdo Training” and “Searching for the forgotten half in martial arts.”

These works precisely articulate the direction and ultimate goal of modern martial arts in the 21st century, emphasizing how to train both the body and the mind and how to apply these skills in daily life.

They also clarify what constitutes proper training after mastering the techniques. More details are elaborated in the two books.

In essence, martial arts emphasize three components: skills, philosophy, and healing. Omitting any one of these aspects precludes achieving the ultimate goal of martial arts for modern individuals.

Understanding why our ancestors referred to martial arts as “Muye” sheds light on why the training system of Jin Young Ssangkum Ryu is praised as top-notch or top-elite

No matter how proficient one is in cutting, kumbups(forms), or Keyukkum(sparring), Kummu(sword dance), etc. in Haedong Kumdo, it encompasses only a small part of the whole.

Especially, Jin Young Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo has upgraded the existing Haedong Kumdo by adding training in healing and philosophy, essential elements that were missing.

By prioritizing the acquisition of “Energy Flow,”: Self-Acquirement, these practices enrich lifelong training and lead to a more abundant and fulfilled life.

Jin Young Ssangkum Ryu teaches the fundamental principles and essence according to the laws of nature and truth. Through this, I aim to convey these truths at the upcoming seminar in the United States from April 5 to 7, 2024.

Occasionally, on social media, we come across individuals who still exhibit exclusive and dismissive attitudes towards training from other associations within the Haedong Kumdo community. However, regardless of affiliation, anyone can participate in the 2024 USA Seminar hosted by Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo.

If your training has been lacking, it’s an opportunity to discuss how to address those deficiencies, or if you excel in certain aspects like cutting or kumbups(forms), what the next steps should be, and ultimately, what the ultimate goal of martial arts is.

This seminar would provide a platform for dialogue, questions, and answers.

Haedong Kumdo has been spreading in the United States for over 20 years now. Many Haedong Kumdo instructors are interested and hopeful to have an opportunity to assess the level and quality of their respective training.

수많은 한국의 태권도, 합기도 원로 무술 사범들이 삼 사 십년 전 미국으로 건너가 육체적 한계를 뛰어넘는 많은 기술들을 전수해주었다.

본인은 “Think out of the box through Haedong Kumdo Training”와 “Searching for the forgotten half in martial arts” 라는 두 권의 영문판 교본을 출간하면서, 21세기 현대 무술의 가야 할 방향과 무술의 궁극적 목표를 정확히 제시하면서, 무술 수련에서 몸과 수련을 어떻게 하는 것인지, 그것을 익힌 후, 실생활에 어떻게 사용할 수 있는 것인지, 또한 어떻게 하는 것이 올바른 수련인지를 확연히 나타내고 있다. 자세한 내용은 위 두 권의 책을 읽어보면 잘 설명되어 있다.

간추려 이야기 해본다면,

무술은 술기(skills)와 철학(philosophy)과 치유(hwmealing)라는 세 가지 항목 중 어느 한 가지라도 빠지면 21세기 현대인을 위한 무술의 궁극적 목표에 결코 도달할 수 없다는 것을 강조하고 싶다.

우리 선조들이 martial arts를 왜, 무예라고 칭했는지 알수있다면 진영쌍검류의 수련시스템을 왜 top-notch 혹은 Top-Elite 라고 말하는지 이해할 수 있게된다.

해동검도에서 베기나 검법이나 격검을 아무리 잘 한다고 해도 그것은 작은 한 부분에 지나지않는다.

특히 진영쌍검류 해동검도는, 무술에서 반드시 익혀야 할 세 가지 중, 기존의 해동검도에서 빠진 부분인 힐링과 철학 부분, 즉 마음을 다스리는 수련을 첨가하여 기존의 해동검도를 업그래이드 시키면서, 좀 더 완벽한 무예 시스템을 갖추었다.

힐링과 철학을 위한 수련은 반드시 가장 우선적으로 “Energy Flow의 체득”이 관건이 되며, 그것이 각자의 평생 수련과 여유롭고 풍요로운 삶을 만들어가게 된다.

그러한 사실들을 진영쌍검류에서는 가장 기본이 되는 핵심과 본질을 가지고 자연의 이치와 법, 진리에 따라 가르치고 있다는 사실을 이번 미국 세미나를 통해 전하고자 한다.

해동검도 수련에서 아직까지도 타 협회의 수련에 대해 배타적이고 냉소적이기까지 한 사람들을 sns를 통해 가끔씩 보게 된다. Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo는 협회와는 무관하게 누구라도 4월에 개최될 2024 USA Seminar에 참가할 수가 있다.

미국에 해동검도가 보급된 지는

약 20여년이 훌쩍 넘었다. 미국의 많은 해동검도 지도자들이 관심을 가지고, 여태까지 각자의 수련의 수준과 정도를 살펴볼 수있는 기회를 가질 수 있길 기대해 본다.
